The school takes its name from the founder of the first school in Whittlesford, an 18th century businessman who set up a trust to educate the young people of the village. William Westley died on July 13th 1723. The old school house now houses the Cambridge Galleries.

The present school lies at the very heart of the village set in extensive grounds near the village green.
